Brief: Design a Guesthouse for a pilgrim visiting Canterbury witha view of the Cathedral. Base 2 X Carpark spaces. 5 x 5 metres
My design is to accomodate for Metal worker, Sculptor, who uses the bottom of of the guesthouse as studio space, and upstairs as living and sleeping area. The staircase is same angle of the dividing line between the two areas, working and living, so that when ascending or descending on the staircase, head height is the gap in-between the two areas and can look outside through the diagonal long window whilst doing so.
Underneath Blackfriars Bridge, London, is a unique ‘inside, outside’ space. If you walk beneath, you are covered by grand rich maroon painted wrought iron curved I shaped beams which support the busy road above. It is a space that is out of mind for most, but holds so much potential. Not a sensible space for us to live in due to tidal tendencies and adverse flooding, yet, a very sensible space to use for a temporary structure or instalment. To me this is an intriguing one, with endless possibilities.
My proposal for this space is an artwork to be lived in by London’s most common thriving creatures; the rat, pigeon and city fox. My intent being for the public to visit and observe my artistic installation, whilst seeing how these animals occupy the space designed to be their ‘luxury hotel’.
